Biblical Grounds

We live in a turbulent time, let’s face it. But what weighs most heavily upon people’s minds is that of the Israeli-Lebanon conflict. Many Americans support Israel because she is our political ally. Many Christians support Israel because of our common ground in same God and same Old Testament. Here is my question to anyone who reads this post. What is the biblical grounds for supporting Israel in this conflict?

I ask that question because I read an article at Chrsitianity Today in which the academic dean of Arab Baptist Theological Seminary discusses the conflict. Many Lebanonese people, including our brothers and sisters in Christ, are fleeing to Hezbollah’s banner. Do we support an action that is causing our fellow Christians to flee towards terroists? What do you guys think?

Well people always quote the “I will bless those who bless you” passage to say that we must be pro-Israel. I don’t think so. Right now Israeli’s are without question for the most part secular, so are we supporting the people of God by unquestioningly backing them…no. However, I do still think in this instance Israel is in the right, Hezbollah really needs to be disarmed that’s clear. The reason so many are fleeing to Hezbollah is that really the Lebanese gov’t is impotent and can’t even govern their own country.

But as Christians we need to remember there really are more Christian Palesinians than Christian Jews for example. One ex-Muslim I heard was talking about how the Arab Christians feel so ostracized by the western Church in it’s pro-Israel ideals.

But as Christians we need to remember there really are more Christian Palesinians than Christian Jews for example.

I don’t understand this argument. While it is true that there are more Christian Palestinians, does it matter? We are not called to care about Christians over other people, are we?

The religious beliefs of those being attacked, killed, or persecuted should not matter.

It’s not an argument. The former Muslim is expressing how many Arab Christians feel ostracized by the Western Church’s pro-Israel stance. The problem is that to be pro-Israel is generally to be anti-Palestinian (in general) because there are many Palestinians who are Christians they feel ostracized.
All I was really saying is that we need to consider this because yes, we are supposed to care about the body of Christ, whether or not above the unconverted I haven’t really thought too much, a few scriptures come to mind that seem to support this.

Puritanbob,
You’ve hit the heart of what I feel about in this whole conflict. The Lebanese Christians, and most Middle Eastern Christians, are ignored for their brave attempts to survive in their lands. Between facist Muslims and even some of the Jews, although Jewish persecution is almost nonexistant, they have been a great testimony for the word of Christ. I feel we cannot forget them in this conflict because they are our brother’s and sisters.
