Vacation

This is Henry (Honzo) Imler. I’ll be on vacation for the next week. My wife and I are celebrating our 5th wedding anniversary. I am sure some of the other authors will be posting while I am gone.

Here is a little something to keep you occupied while I work up some posts on grace in Restorationist Theology.

A New Testament Student: A Question

Did the authors of the New Testament understand that they were writing Scripture?

I suppose it depends on the author. I would say that John most certainly did (any Jew with the chutzpah to begin a book with “In the Beginning” would have to) with both his Gospel and Revelation. The other Gospels, I think less so, but probably still. The epistles I don’t feel were thought to be “scripture” by the authors per se - but certainly were written to be authoritative binding teaching in the church.

I might differ with you on the specifics on the authors, but I agree with you at least in principle on this.

Something that is good to keep in mind on this issue is that no matter how the original authors saw their writings, they came to be authoritative for the early church and through a long process came to be verified by the Holy Spirit to be scripture.

I have a lot of other question about canon formation and how scripture should be viewed - but that is for later.

Good comment WfO.
