Golden Compass

Is there any reason to not watch this movie?

What should be our standard with movies (culture)?

Good question - I have not answered yet because I know not how to reply. From what I understand the author of the book is a pretty crazed atheist and is on record saying that the goal with the books is to kill God in the minds of children. Dang. Lets compare that with “I want to be a billionare”/Harry Potter.

Given that, I don’t know if I would want my children (which don’t currently exist) watching and then reading the books. However, if a children’s book destroys my son/daughter’s faith in God, then perhaps my wife and I have not done everything in our power to teach the children about God and its relationship to humankind. Having said that, I have no children, I have no idea what it is like to raise a child. As a consequent of this, I have no space in which to speak on this issue.

For myself, I try to stay away from media that enticies me to sin more, or to turn further away from right relationship with God and her creation. Given that, I have to ask myself if watching the movie would move me further away from Him. Because I don’t think that watching a movie that is arguing against Christianity would in fact move me away from It, I think that it is completely allowable for myself to watch the movie.

There is an added benefit to seeing the movie - relationship with non-believers. If I do see the movie, I can use it to better relate and build relationships with non-believers. And as we know from our sacred texts and from the history of our faith, building authentic relationships for their own sake is one of the best ways of turning legitimate images of God back to Him.

So, those are my best thoughts on the subject - anyone else?

I would say, if you are an evangelist or apologetics major, you should definitely watch it.

From a day-to-day Christian parent’s perspective, I would skip it because the trailer looks dumb. Elmo Saves Christmas is still a much better choice!

    Egdar.

I am going to watch the movie. How can I respond to questions if I don’t see it.
I sped read through a little of the 3 books, (They are redoing them as children’s books) The first being the golden compass. The books seemed poorly written. He will never be remembered like C.S. Lewis.
Disturbing thing is that each child has a “daemon” which is in animal form.
In the intro the description of the main girl character states “she is not afraid to lie”

May the fear of the Lord guard our hearts and minds as we lead people forward in the truth, that our God is BIG enough to use this for His glory. After all, the crucifixion kinda backfired.
“For our battle is not against flesh and blood, but against the principalities and powers of darkness” Eph. 6:12
My prayer is that the church responds correctly on this one and does not give them controversy that leads to more people seeing it.
