Women in Leadership in the Church

Honzo April 2nd, 2008

As I am reading chapter 6 of In Memory of Her, Fiorenza is examining the titles and positions of women in the ministry of Paul.  I am double checking her claims and translations via BibleWorks in the ESV, NLT, NRSV, Young’s Literal, and both the BGT and BYZ Greek texts.  While I don’t have time to get into specifics1 , the case is getting thiner and thiner for a lack of women in positions of power and leadership in the early Church that were endorsed by Paul.

As a side note, there is an inverse relationship between my hatred for Wisdom Ways and my love for In Memory of Her, both by Fiorenza.

  1. I have another 75 pages and another article to go through and then come up with a presentation/discussion for class tommorow []

I was reading some on the topic last night and thought, “Man, how can this not be so obvious?” But, at the same time, I didn’t always hold the position I do now, so I can have some mercy on those to whom this subject is ‘obviously’ the other direction.

I must say, I went back and read parts of Wisdom Ways a month ago or so, and I have a much stronger appreciation for it now than I did when we read it in Gospel Lit way back when. I think you may like it much more now, especially after reading more of ESF’s work.

Probably her most important recent book is Rhetoric and Ethic: The Politics of Biblical Studies. In that one she basically deconstructs and challenges the entire way we’ve been approaching Biblical Studies for decades now. There’s some tremendous stuff in there, definitely worth a read when you get a chance.
